The CNR Spatial Modeling and Computing (SMaC) group is recognized as requiring extensive computing resources and the potential to benefit from collaborative and shared computing resources. In 2003 several core members of the group were moved to the newly renovated Janet Quinney Lawson building with a dedicated server room to house the shared resources of the SMAC, GeoSpa, and Utah Climate Center.
Beginning in 2005 the SMaC group and GeoSpa rapidly migrated from a Solaris desktop environment to a Windows and Macintosh desktop environment prompted by the availability of ArcGIS for the Windows environment. Much of the Solaris, and Linux infrastructure remains to accommodate the high performance computing, large data volume, and unique application needs of the groups. Several of the unique features of Solaris and Linux are available to CNR and USU affiliates for a small fee.
